The Chambon Castle

Historical

In the footsteps of the castle

Located in the Haut-Allier valley, surrounded by a park with a majestic alley of lime trees, overlooking the Blot cliff, a prehistoric site of European scope, the Château du Chambon, MH, was built at the beginning of the 15th century then humanized over the centuries to make it luxurious and very comfortable. Built by the Blau family, known from 1160 for their possessions in the Brioude region.

It was, in fact, in 1409 that Guillaume de Blau, lord of Gibertès, Auvers and Cronce, bought the seigneury of Chambon and abandoned his castle of La Roche-Blau in favor of this place of Chambon, with a less harsh climate. As the family died out in the 17th century with Françoise de Gibertès, the castle was sold to a bourgeois from Langeac, Jean Véal. His descendants still possessed him during the Revolution.

Jean Balthazar Véal de Blau, a brilliant officer in Condé's army, was hostile to the new regime, and had to emigrate. His property was placed under sequestration but he returned to France under the Restoration and became mayor of Langeac. Décédé sans postérité, il céda ses biens à Messieurs de Lastic et de Chazelles. Le château changea ensuite plusieurs fois de propriétaires.
